Acoustic & Sound environment

BAUX Acoustic Wood Wool
Yes, if adding stone wool (40mm) behind BAUX Wood Wool, you will be able to achieve A-Class. You can add stone wool to your BAUX order.

BAUX Acoustic Pulp
At the moment BAUX has not performed any acoustical tests to verify acoustical ratings for other installation methods than directly mounted to the wall. However, adding stone wool (40mm) behind BAUX Acoustic Pulp will increase the sound absorption. Tests will be conducted during 2019 to verify the exact result with stone wool backing.

BAUX Acoustic Felt
BAUX Acoustic Felt as a stand alone divider or desk stand does not offer any additional options to further increase the acoustic rating.

Absolutely! Just note that BAUX products absorb sound in the room, rather than isolating the sound. See the question “Is the BAUX material sound isolating?” in the FAQ for further information.

BAUX products are not designed to block sound and stop noise travel from one room to another. BAUX products are designed to absorb sound and reduce reflections within a space.

The vertical axis is the absorption coefficient, which indicates the level of absorption. Zero (0) means that no sound is absorbed, i.e. 100% of all incoming sound towards the material surface is reflected back into the room again. This is typically true for very hard materials. One (1) means that all sound is absorbed in the material, i.e. no sound is reflected back into the room. A value of 0.5 means that 50% of the incoming sound is absorbed (disappears) and 50% is reflected back into the room.

The horizontal axis is the frequency of the sound (HZ). The higher the frequency, the higher the pitch of the sound you hear.

The curve indicates how much sound BAUX Acoustic products absorb for different frequency spans. BAUX Wood Wool is well equipped to absorb human voice frequencies (between 500-4000Hz). NRC (Noise Reduction Coefficient) is an average rating of how much sound an acoustic product can absorb.

The sound graph can be found on specific product pages and in our catalogue for Acoustic Pulp or Acoustic Wood Wool. You can find the catalogue in our Architect Toolkit download section on our website.

To give an exact answer, we recommend you consult an acoustics expert who can visit and make precise calculations. BAUX can offer advice, or consult remotely. Please contact BAUX HQ or your local BAUX sales representative.

NRC stands for ‘Noise Reduction Coefficient’. It is a rating system that explains how much sound an acoustic product can absorb. NRC ratings range from 0 to 1. An NRC rating of 0 means that the product absorbs no sound. An NRC rating of 1 means that the product absorbs all sound. In other words the higher the NRC, the better the product is at soaking up the sound.

The thickness and density of a product are two factors in calculating an NRC value. An acoustic product with a .95 NRC rating means that 95% of the sound in the space is absorbed, while the other 5% is reflected.

A well-designed acoustic environment can improve productivity and have a positive effect on health and wellbeing. Noise affects workers in four ways: physiological (sudden and unpleasant noise can increase heartbeat), psychological (sound can either calm us down or raise stress levels), cognitively (how we perceive things which affects our learning capacity) and finally behaviorally (noise can make us more aggressive and less helpful).

Installation & maintenance

BAUX Acoustic Wood Wool
The combination of wood wool and cement makes the material hard and durable, and is therefore often used in schools or gymnasiums. Surface damages due to heavy impact can easily be covered with good result using touch up paint.

BAUX Acoustic Pulp
BAUX Acoustic Pulp is an acoustical panel designed for interior wall applications. The biomimicry engineered cellulose material and the product design gives the product durable and strong properties. However, Acoustic Pulp should still be handled with care and not be placed in humid or dirty environments or in areas were it will be exposed to high impact and wear. The 0% wheat version is slightly more sensitive than the other versions.

BAUX Acoustic Wood Wool
Yes, it is possible to cut our tiles with a circular saw, tiger saw or similar. The colors do not run through the material, so if you cut the tiles, you need to use touch up paint.

BAUX Acoustic Pulp
Yes, it is possible to carefully cut the Acoustic Pulp with a fine circular saw, jig saw or similar. However, as the panel is hollow inside, the edges holds the structure together so it’s a limitation to what extent you can cut the panel. The cut panels should be placed so that the open gaps can be covered.

BAUX Acoustic Felt
Cutting or resizing the BAUX Acoustic Felt is not recommended. Instead opt for any of our 9 available sizes found here.

BAUX Acoustic Wood Wool
Yes. BAUX Wood Wool is moisture-resistant and the high pH-value of BAUX products discourages mold or mildew, making it rot resistant. BAUX products are suitable for kitchens, bathrooms and swimming pool areas. When using BAUX products in shower rooms, tiles or panels should only be mounted on the ceiling and not on the walls.

BAUX Acoustic Pulp
You should not install BAUX Acoustic Pulp in high-moisture areas such as bathrooms. If you install in kitchens you should avoid areas close to moisture.

BAUX Acoustic Felt
Using BAUX Acoustic Felt in kitchens with high levels of humidity or wet rooms is not recommended.

BAUX Acoustic Wood Wool
Yes! You can order Pattex glue directly from BAUX and we can help you calculate how much you need. Glue is the easiest and cheapest way to mount BAUX Acoustic Wood Wool panels and tiles. If you would like to purchase the glue yourself, we recommend a standard fixing glue like Pattex No More Nails, Casco Superfix or Loctite Powergrab.

If you’d prefer to install your BAUX Wood Wool products with screws, we recommend that you talk to a local craftsman to ensure you use suitable screws. We recommend painting over the screw heads with touch up paint, which we provide free of charge.

We do not recommend installing BAUX Acoustic Pulp with screws.

BAUX Acoustic Felt
Installing BAUX Acoustic Felt is made easy thanks to varities of hardware. Screws or glue as an installation method for BAUX Acoustic Felt is not recommended.

BAUX often has knowledge about local installers that are experienced in the installation of our products. Consult your local BAUX office for advice or find our information on the BAUX contact page.

BAUX Acoustic Wood Wool
There are a number of different ways to attach BAUX wood wool tiles and panels to the ceiling. We suggest either screws or suspending grid systems. In some situations you can also use glue or magnets but local circumstances and conditions need to be taken into account.

You can view our installation instructions in our download section or view them in your browser here.  For complete instructions, please contact BAUX at [email protected] to retrieve the installation instructions document.

BAUX Acoustic Pulp
BAUX Acoustic Pulp is designed for indoor wall applications and should preferably not be mounted to the ceiling.

BAUX Acoustic Wood Wool
For complete instructions and guidelines, go to our download section, or please contact BAUX at [email protected].

Applying BAUX Wood Wool with adhesive is the easiest and fastest way to install BAUX products. We suggest Pattex No More Nails since it performs well and has zero VOC. Other approved types are Casco Superfix and Loctite Powergrab. Pattex can be ordered through BAUX when placing your order.

Another option is to buy BAUX Wood Wool with magnets attached to the back of each tile or panel. When using this method you will need to mount the BAUX tiles or panels onto metal sheets or metal cassettes (these can also be ordered through BAUX) and the tiles/panels are then attached by hand and can easily be rearranged according to taste. The cassettes create an air-gap against the wall, which has the added bonus of improving sound absorption slightly. If you use magnets, bear in mind that the creative pattern of the tiles must be adapted to match the dimensions of the cassettes and sheets.

A third way to install BAUX Wood Wool is to use screws. BAUX provides touch up paint (85ml) for free in all orders to cover screw heads. This is the recommended method if you intend to install in the ceiling.

BAUX Acoustic Felt
Each panel in the BAUX Acoustic Felt system is equipped with a series of uniform grooves that fit seamlessly together with the hardware. The cylindrical tracks lend flexible options for both vertical and horizontal setups, and static or adaptable configurations that can be tilted at an angle.

Sustainability

BAUX supplier selection process follows a rigid and detailed qualification procedure with the ambition to find long term partners. BAUX’s main objective with suppliers goes beyond finding suppliers that can deliver our products. Instead, we seek long term partners that share the BAUX vision and are able to shape the future together with us. We build lasting relationships with our partners and collaboratively develop successful products. We work hard together, constantly striving to push the boundaries in sustainability, creativity, productivity, service levels and so on. Sustainability and environmental questions are always one of the first key criterias we look for. As a result, we always go beyond our suppliers to understand their sub-suppliers and the root source of all materials sourced, in order to make sure we can offer our customers the lowest possible environmental impact across the whole material chain. Beyond this we also require our suppliers to comply with IWAY requirements. Among other things this means that they have to prevent child labour, secure non-discrimination, compensate their workers with reasonable wages, provide safe and healthy work environments and much more.

BAUX Acoustic Wood Wool
We aim to create the lowest possible environmental impact across our whole material chain – from the original raw material to production, delivery, installation, usage and recycling or re-usage of products. We continue to make progress and continuous improvements towards this goal. Forests are PEFC and FSC certified and timber is collected close to the factory to minimize environmental impact. Entire logs are used in production and waste from all stages of production is ground down and reused for new products or used to heat our factory.

BAUX Acoustic Pulp
We aim to create the lowest possible environmental impact across our whole material chain – from the original raw material to production, delivery, installation, usage and recycling or re-usage of products. We continue to make progress and continuous improvements towards this goal. All cellulose comes from Swedish PEFC and FSC certified forests. All of the Acoustic Pulp leftover ingredients and water are recycled back into the factory’s closed circular system to be reused again in the next batch. The only emission generated from production is a tiny amount of pure and clean water vapor that’s released as the material dries.

BAUX Acoustic Felt
BAUX Acoustic Felt is made out of upcycled fabric offcuts combined with a low melt polyester fibre that gives the material its structure. The offcuts consist of a 100% polyester based thread, sourced from textile producers in Sweden—resources which normally would have been incinerated. Thanks to our relationships with textile producers, we can ensure a traceable and continuous flow of material with desirable quality. Each batch of threads is dyed locally in Sweden in a closed process that follows Swedish environmental legislation. The hardware is made to minimise unnecessary production and streamline the assembly process, we downsized our hardware kit to just four standardised and meticulously designed pieces. They’re made out of 100% recyclable metal, and 100% recycled plastic, and they work for the entire BAUX Acoustic Felt system.

BAUX Acoustic Wood Wool
There are no recycled materials in BAUX Wood Wool products because the wood wool fibers need to be of a certain length to create the open structure that generates the functional requirements of BAUX products.

BAUX Acoustic Pulp
There are no recycled materials in BAUX Acoustic Pulp products. The wheat bran, used in in the panels in color 05 and 30, is a residue from the Swedish agricultural food industry. The cellulose is borrowed from the Swedish forest and the panels can be recycled multiple times and reused, making new panels or other cellulose based products.

BAUX Acoustic Wood Wool
BAUX Wood Wool products are mounted with screws can be easily removed and reused. If the recommended amount of glue is used to glue BAUX products to a wall, it is sometimes possible to remove the small tiles, but please be careful. Unpainted products without adhesive on the back can be ground down and reused as ballast, filling material or a moisture absorbent layer for a running track etc.

BAUX Acoustic Pulp
If the recommended amount of glue is used to mount BAUX Acoustic Pulp products to a wall, it is possible to remove the panel by using a sharp tool. Today BAUX only offer glue mounting but we will soon be able to provide alternative mounting methods that enable and encourage re-usage of the products. The panels can be recycled, you should sort them as a cardboard material.

BAUX Acoustic Felt
Yes this will be possible. However, today we are unable to present certificates or test on this matter. Currently this is a high priority so we will hopefully be able to present more regarding this in the coming months.

BAUX Acoustic Wood Wool
Yes, BAUX Wood Wool is a sustainable product. It is developed from natural, environmentally friendly materials and it has a long lifetime. BAUX products contain three natural ingredients: wood wool, water, and cement. All are sourced and produced in Sweden.

BAUX Acoustic Pulp
BAUX Acoustic Pulp is probably the most sustainable acoustic panel in the world that manages to combine 100% bio-based materials, 100% recyclability, 100% biodegradability and 0% pollution or waste in production – with performance properties of sound absorption, safety, durability and modern aesthetics.

BAUX Acoustic Felt
BAUX Acoustic Felt is made using a method of upcycling where each panel consists of 40% textile offcuts. Each panel is carefully pressed instead of glued and made into a single standardised sheet to minimize spill. The hardware is made from 100% recyclable metal and 100% recyclable plastic.

Design

BAUX Acoustic Wood Wool
With great care, it is possible to repaint BAUX Wood Wool tiles and panels. We recommend spray painting to maintain their acoustic performance.

BAUX Acoustic Pulp
No, we do not recommend painting the panels. The surface of the panel is nano-perforated to allow sound waves to enter inside the panel. If paint is applied, these small holes will be covered and the acoustical performance of the panel will decrease.

BAUX Acoustic Felt
BAUX Acoustic Felt should not be repainted.

BAUX Acoustic Wood Wool
No, you cannot order different sizes of wood fibers. BAUX products are designed to maintain the best possible acoustic performance in one beautiful design.

BAUX has 20 colors in our standard palette – see our color scheme for more details.

BAUX Acoustic Pulp
No, since the BAUX acoustic Pulp panels are not painted. Adding paint would have compromised our vision of creating a 100%-bio-based product. Instead, with BAUX Acoustic Pulp, color is achieved using different percentages of wheat bran—0, 5 and 30%.

BAUX Acoustic Felt
BAUX Acoustic Felt is naturally variegated in colour. Each batch of threads is dyed locally in a closed process that follows Swedish environmental legislation. The resulting trio of effortless monochromatic hues complements most interiors. Currently, further customization is not available.
