Campus Borlänge is one of Högskolan Dalarna’s most ambitious projects to date. Set in the heart of Borlänge’s historic steel industry district, the former Liljan property has been transformed into a modern, flexible, and inspiring environment for education and collaboration. The extensive renovation and expansion were led by Archus, with White Arkitekter responsible for the interior architecture, loose furnishings, and lighting in the 13,300-square-metre building.
Designed to foster creativity and lifelong learning, the new campus features a rich mix of spatial experiences: learning environments, laboratories, a library, auditorium, café, and office spaces. White was commissioned to develop interiors that support the university’s evolving needs. Sustainability was a guiding principle and a key challenge was to implement a genuinely circular approach. Alongside the reuse of furnishings and the careful selection of materials, BAUX wood wool tiles were a natural solution that helped to improve the acoustics whilst delivering on the university’s sustainable commitments.
BAUX Acoustic Wood Wool has been installed in the dining hall, where up to one hundred students gather each day for lunch and relaxation. This busy space needed to absorb layers of sound: voices, conversations, the scrape of chairs, the clink of cutlery. The design team specified BAUX Wood Wool Tiles for two key wall installations, chosen not only for their high-performance sound absorption (Class A rating) but to make a visual statement in the space.
Beyond their acoustic utility, the BAUX wood wool designs became a storytelling element, drawing on Dalarna’s heritage of textiles and craft traditions, with the patterning and colour choice referencing the region’s artisanal legacy and natural beauty. The result is an acoustic solution that elevates the interior with textures, colours, and a strong sense of place. A powerful reminder that high-performance materials don’t need to compromise on aesthetic impact. At Campus Borlänge, sustainability and storytelling have been woven together in a modern space that improves focus, well-being, and the everyday dining experience.
